Creating a Rustic BBQ Table Setting

Partnership with KRA Sanctuary

Just before I left Singapore, I created a rustic tablescape to showcase KRA Sanctuary’s Charcoal Grill collection.

Every time I start with a tablescape, I think of the mood and colour scheme. Usually I lean towards light summery designs, but for this collection I wanted to bring to life the moody sexier look and feel these darker plates resembled.

Here are my 3 key learnings my Rustic BBQ Tablescape:

  1. Colour Palette

I went onto Pinterest to look for inspo by typing in ‘modern rustic bbq’. I noticed a lot of dark moody colours like dark green and purple, however I opted to add some neutrals to balance the colour of the plates.

  • Olive greens, deep violet hues & white to soften the whole look.

  • A beige linen table runner and napkins to add contrast to the flowers, plates and table.

  • Focus on greenery and add in pops of violet. This helped it look less goth-like.

2. Flowers

You can never go wrong with eucalyptus leaves as a staple in any table design. For this setting, I wanted to use foliage which reminded me of ‘olive branches’. Then for the flowers, I chose red, violet and white florals to add colour and dimension.

Here’s the ratio I used when I went to the flower market:

  • Big Focal flowers (10%) | eg. red flower in the middle of the table

  • Medium sized flowers (60%) | eg. white ranunculus

  • Filler flowers (30%) | eg. thin lavender looking branches & violet flowers

  • You will also need green foliage, which I usually choose eucalyptus branches.

3. Final Touches

Small mason jars and candles. I add these in to almost every table setting!

I added around 4 small jars and filled them with shorter flower stems. Usually I will do a mix of greens and flowers, but the point of these jars is to add a more ‘whimsical’ look to the table. So I will do various heights of the flowers and nothing too big or thick.

I also love to add candles (usually flameless candles so I don’t burn the house down), which add a ‘pop’ to the table. It also looks fantastic during sunset.

This was a great project to work on as I typically use a lot more lighter ‘garden party’ florals and colours. But I absolutely loved playing with this ‘moody’ rustic bbq colour palette. With all my Nonna Lizzie dinners, setting the table is only 50%! There was still lots of cooking to be done. If you want to check out some recipes:

  • Baked Brie with Blueberry Coulis

  • Caramelised Onion and Goats Cheese Flatbread

  • Lemon Curd Cheesecake.

Until then, happy styling and cooking!
